Leeds’ premier freestyle jazz/neo-soul/global beats/hip-hop live session Soul Rebels, hosted by leading longtime UK DJ/promoter Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi), celebrates it’s fifth birthday this autumn at The Wardrobe. What better way to do this than with a huge funk and soul party featuring the country’s top funk band alongside one of the rising stars of UK neo-soul/future soul.
The Haggis Horns first hit the UK music scene back in 1999, initially as the horn section for The New Mastersounds on their “Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds” debut album. As a live band, they soon established themselves as one of the best funk bands in the country. As a horn section they definitely became the best in the UK, as acknowledged by the list of people they have worked with – Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Martha Reeves, Lou Donaldson, Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae just to name a few. In 2007, they made their recording debut with UK hip-hop/soul/jazz/beats label First Word Records with their first album “Hot Damn!”. After several single release, they followed up with their second album “Keep On Moving” in 2010, also for First Word Records. In 2015, they delivered their third album “What Comes To Mind” on their own new label Haggis Records.
In 2017, over 18 years since they first started, they are as busy as ever. They released a limited edition single on vinyl specialist Stutter & Twitch Records in the spring. In summer, they drop their new single on Haggis Records “Take It Back” featuring guest rapper Doc Brown. A full-on old school block party hip-hop/funk banger. Loads of gigs at the summer festivals and then comes the fourth Haggis Horns album, out early October and being launched at this gig. The band will have the full A-team in place for this show including singer John McCallum (Corinne Bailey Rae band) and more guests still to be confirmed.
Support artist is singer Mali Hayes, one of the rising stars of the UK neo-soul/future soul scene. After graduating from Leeds College Of Music 18 months ago, the Mancunian singer has been building a following across the country with two single releases and a debut EP, all original material self-produced, financed and released by herself. In January 2017, she won a place on the prestigious Brownswood Records (Gilles Peterson’s label) “Future Bubblers” scheme where the label mentors and assists promising new young artists on their first steps in their musical careers. If you like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Corinne Bailey Rae, you will love the voice and music of Mali Hayes.
DJs on the night, as always, are Soul Rebels residents Lubi and Chris. Expect the usual mix of old and new, known and underground, listening and dancefloor sounds. Like the Soul Rebels motto says ”from Fela to Dilla and beyond…”
Soul Rebels sessions, both at The Wardrobe plus stand alone gigs and co-promotions at other Leeds venues, have featured many great international, national and local acts. These include The Abstract Orchestra, Thundercat (USA), Femi Kuti, Jose James (USA), The Haggis Horns, Ed Motta (Brazil), Nubiyan Twist, Roller Trio, Renegade Brass Band, London Afrobeat Collective, Yussef Kamaal, Paper Tiger, Criolo (Brazil), Jungle Fire (USA), THABO, Noya Rao, Omar, The Mouse Outfit, Coleman Brothers, Riot Jazz Brass Band, TY, Dulahli, Mansion Of Snakes, Fayth Hope (USA), Hot Diamond Aces and many more too numerous to mention. It’s the go-to session now in Leeds if you love your jazz, soul, hip-hop, Latin and global beats live and mixed up under one roof. Long may it continue.
