Nubiyan Twist formed in 2011 at Leeds College Of Music when a group of like-minded young musicians got together to play the music they all loved – soul, funk, jazz, hiphop, reggae, afrobeat and dub. Fronted by female singer/rapper Nubiya Brandon and under the musical direction of guitarist/producer Tom Excell, the 12 piece collective soon made a name for themselves with their unique fusion of black music styles. Popular at Soul Rebels since their debut in 2012, they’ve shared stages with the likes of De La Soul, Hot 8 Brass Band, Quantic, Robert Glasper, DJ Yoda, Gilles Peterson and DJ Vadim over the last 3 years. Now mainly based in London/Oxfordshire, they’ve had a couple of single releases the last few year’s and the long awaited debut album finally drops in March 2015 on Wormfood Records. Full info on the band at www.nubiyantwist.co.uk
Pieces Of A Man are an original neo-soul band from Manchester making music that references the past soul masters (their name is a Gil Scott-Heron song title) but comes bang up to date with contemporary production and composition, a fusion of soul, beats and hiphop. The people they love include D’Angelo (of course), Erykah Badu, Bilal, Raphael Saadiq, John Legend, Angie Stone and Jill Scott. That gives you an idea where they’re coming from. Formed by producer DK and vocalist Tolu in 2012, they craft a sound that makes you want to dance and headnod in equal measure. Playing mainly in their home city, they’ve bagged some big support slots over the years with the likes of Bilal, Omar and Leon Ware and expanded from the initial 4 piece beats and vocals combo to a full 7 piece band. We’ve waited 2 years to get them to Soul Rebels and finally it’s on. Check the band’s info and history at www.piecesofaman.org
Soul Rebels DJs Lubi and Chris will keep things moving along nice and steady with their freestyle blend of jazz, hiphop, funk, latin, electronica, reggae, afrobeat, soul, samba and global beats. As the club’s motto says….”from Fela to Dilla and beyond”
